USE OF HONEY FOR TREATMENT OF BURNS
Research has now conclusively proved that the age-old TOTKA of Honey is one of the best treatments for burn wounds.
Following is a recommended method of treating burn wounds:
As suggested in an article on the issue, cool the burned area under cold running water (don't apply ice/freeze the area) and then clean it with saline water to prevent infection. Pour undiluted pure clean honey over the burned area to overlap the wound and cover completely with a thin plastic wrap (you can slit open any clean plastic bag/sandwich bag for this purpose). Secure the plastic wrapping with a bandage and leave it alone for two days. Also take a table spoon of honey three times every day to guard against infection.
Open the dressing after 48 hours and air the wound one hour on the first day increasing by one additional hour each day after the first day of airing. Do not wash the wound. Just pour more honey to cover the burned area and redress the wound in same manner every day till the wound is healed.
Honey is hygroscopic, meaning that it attracts and absorbs moisture. It thus retains the plasma that is inevitably released by the wound and keeps it in close contact with the damaged tissue, allowing for re-absorption. The plasma is enriched with dissolved nutrients, minerals and trace elements, including propolis (which appears to have a disinfectant quality), from the honey when it is re-assimilated into the damaged flesh. The plastic wrapping material does not permit the honey to lose moisture to the atmosphere, and keeps it in intimate contact with the injured tissue. This forestalls desiccation of the burn injury, preventing the formation of unsightly scar tissue. In addition, the honey does not permit the dressing to adhere to the wound, so that the traumatized tissue remains intact when the bandaging is removed. One of the major causes of scarring in burn cases is the rending of the flesh every time the dressing is changed. One may eat a banana every day. Honey and the banana both have a high potassium content, which, besides being beneficial to humans, is highly antagonistic toward harmful bacteria and necrosis-causing organisms. Also increase protein in the diet (egg, milk, meat, etc.) to help growth of new tissue.
In research after research efficacy of honey has been proved beyond any doubt. Just to quote one study on burn victims, wound of 100% patients who reported within 1 hour became sterile with honey dressing in less than 7 days while use of other medications did not prove as effective. The total healing time with honey was also no different. The concluding remarks of the study was that honey dressing improves wound healing, makes the wound sterile in lesser time, has a better outcome in terms of prevention of hypertrophic scarring and post-burn contractures, and decreases the need of debridement irrespective of time of admission, when compared to other dressings used in the study.
No wonder that lately, Honey has become a darling of the Burn/Wound healing industry because of its healing properties and the industry is cashing-in with new products made of honey.
